31 undergraduate students conducted research on many topics, ranging from neutrino detection to star and galaxy formation
The Department of Physics Summer Research Program gives undergraduate Physics and Engineering Physics students the opportunity to gain hands-on research experience alongside an OSU Physics faculty member. Students spend 10 weeks working on a research project of mutual interest, developing valuable skills and gaining insight into the research process. Selected students receive a $5,000 summer scholarship to support their research experience.
The summer research program hosted 31 students who conducted research on topics ranging from neutrino detection to star and galaxy formation, along with many subjects in between. In addition to completing approximately 300 hours of research with a faculty mentor, students participated in professional development events through partnerships with OSU's Graduate School Summer Research Consortium and other undergraduate research programs across campus, including Nexus, CEM, NSF, and SURP. These events covered topics such as conducting and reviewing scientific literature, preparing for graduate school, pursuing fellowship opportunities, and presenting research findings. Students also attended panel discussions highlighting a variety of career paths available to graduates in physics, astronomy, and materials science.
For many participants, the program's combination of research independence and mentorship was a defining aspect of the experience. Students also emphasized the strong sense of community and personal growth fostered throughout the summer.
"I have thoroughly enjoyed being able to immerse myself in an environment not only rich and rigorous in academics, but in community as well. This summer experience has been an invaluable component in solidifying my endeavors. I have loved simply learning definitions, computations, and ending each day knowing a bit more than I did yesterday."
– Eling Cheng, Summer Research Student
The summer culminated in the 2026 Consortium Summer Research Symposium, where 171 students from research programs across campus presented posters on their work, while an additional 81 students delivered oral presentations. The symposium provided participants with the opportunity to share their findings, celebrate their accomplishments, and gain experience communicating scientific research to a broader audience.
