Current Phase and Program Status
Phase 2 Design Award, In Progress
- DQS-CP is in NSF NQVL Phase 2 (Design), a two-year, $4M cooperative agreement.
Phase 2 Work Covers:
- Standing up the six-institution consortium and its distributed milestone tracking
- Generating first experimental results on entanglement-enhanced sensing architectures
- Developing the instrument roadmap and testbed design for Phase 3
- Building industry engagement and workforce development pipelines
Phase 3 would support a six-year implementation award under NSF's NQVL QSTD solicitation (NSF 24-586). DQS-CP is building toward that proposal.
NSF's staged design reviews provide the framework for maturing both the sensing technologies and the instrument concepts. Results from these parallel efforts will establish the technical and programmatic foundation for the DQS-CP Phase 3 proposal.
Milestones
- December 2024 — DQS-CP awarded Phase 1 (Pilot) with a consortium of Ohio State University, MIT, University of Chicago, and University of Iowa.
- July 2025 — Phase 1 Town Hall, Boston. 61 participants set the program's sensing targets and working principles.
- June 2026 — DQS-CP awarded Phase 2 (Design); consortium expands to include University of Colorado and University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB).
- 2026–2027 — Entanglement-enhanced sensing measurements: first experimental results across multiple modalities.
- Spring 2027 — NSF Preliminary Design Review: first formal design gate for the Phase 3 testbed.
- Target: 2027 — NSF Phase 3 Implementation Proposal.
